Conference Reports

Upbeet conference 2010

In February, the Upbeet project held a conference on working with young adult carers aged 14-21 and the barriers they face. The keynote speaker was Prof Saul Becker of the University of Nottingham, who has carrried out significant research on carers and young carers issues. One of his most recent reports was Young Adult Carers in the UK (2008).

You can download a copy of Prof Becker's presentation here (pdf).

A brief report of the conference is available here (pdf).

To take forward the work of the conference, the project has developed a questionnaire for existing young carers projects and those who are planning to develop services for young adult carers in the 16-25 age group. This has been sent to all those who attended the conference in February. We would also welcome feedback from other professionals working with young adult carers. If you would like to share information about your project or planned service, if you would like to access training or share good practice, or if you would like to participate in a planned working group, please take the time to download the questionnaire here (word doc).

We have also carried out a small-scale research project with young adult carers involved in Upbeet entitled 'How no?' Young adult carers' experiences of barriers to further education, training and employment in Dundee (pdf).
