One of the main routes taken by the Project to identify young carers has been through work with secondary schools. Work has been undertaken in three out of ten secondary schools in Dundee, involving the development and delivery of school work packs through Social Education classes in Baldragon and Harris Academy, training in peer support for young carers in Menzieshill High.
At Baldragon and Harris Academy, our Development Worker has developed and delivered school work packs through Social Education classes that have raised awareness of young carers’ issues. The YCP video has been used in some of sessions and evaluations at the time have shown that it and the school work packs were well received by pupils and guidance teachers alike.
The Guidance Teachers at Baldragon and Harris Academy now deliver the school work packs to pupils as part of the Social Education curriculum. These classes are also used to help young people identify if they themselves were young carers and to provide them with the opportunity to speak to the YCP if they felt they needed additional support.
If you would like more information, or are a teacher and would be interested in training being given to pupils in your school, please contact the YCP office.
