WHAT’S THE PROCESS
Young people may be referred to Young Carers Project by a number of agencies including both statutory and voluntary and by self-referral.
The process for the actual referral can be made in the following ways: -
- · Telephone
- · Referral form
- · Personal visit to YCP office
Any individual making a referral via the telephone or personal visit to the office will be asked a number of questions relating to the situation of the young carer.
When all appropriate information has been ascertained the referral will be given to one of our Workers for action. The member of staff dealing with the referral will contact the family concerned and introduce project and what it may be able to offer support wise.
CONSENT/CONSENT FORMS
A signed consent form is required by every parent/guardian of the young person when they commence a support through Young Carers Project. This consent allows the worker to take the young carer to activities such as swimming, bowling, ice skating, going to the movies and being taken out in the workers car. (This list is not exhaustive)
The YCP worker will send out the consent form for befriending and/or one to one support for the parents/guardian attention prior to the first visit with the young person. The completed form should be given to the worker at the time of collection on the first visit. This will be the only time that the parent is required to sign this form unless the family move, where a new form will be issued.
If the young carer is over 16 then he/she can sign the form on their own behalf.
The YCP aims to work with young carers in a way that reflects the principles stated in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. YCP staff can therefore meet with young carers without parental consent – but only during school time.
