A young carer is a person under the age of 18 who has caring responsibilites for a member of their family who might be affected by mental health problems, drug or alcohol misuse, a physcial or learning disability, HIV or a long term illness.
This caring role can impact on a young person’s current and future development, as well as their ability to access social, leisure and educational activities.
Below are some statitics taken from referrals that the YCP received during the period October 2005 - March 2006.
- 61% of those referred were male
- 57% of those referred help to care fro their mother
- 31% of those referred help to care for a member of their family who has mental ill-health
- 17% of those referred help to care for a member of their family who has a drug or alcohol dependency
