  Young Carers Assessments

Young carers are often the main person who cares for members of their family who are ill or have a disability. Sometimes young carers are unable to go out with their friends, go to school, or go to clubs because they are helping to care for someone at home.

An assessment is a way of finding what your own needs are, as a carer, and how these could be best met. You will be listened to and your views will be taken into account when the social work department arranges help for the person for whom you are caring.   An assessment is not a test, it is a way to find out what you do to help and how you feel about caring.

The assessment is a booklet which will ask about your life as a young carer. It will ask about school, the person who you look after, the kind of things you do to help the person you care for. Most importantly it will ask how you feel.

You can either ask a social worker or any worker you have contact with in the social work department.  You will meet with someone from the social work department at a place you feel happy with, you can bring someone with you, a friend or a relative.  Over a period of time you go through the booklet.  A record of what you have said will be kept and looked at how your needs could be met.
